Not a regular pick your own operation: this is a single annual open farm weekend. Many walnuts have already fallen and are picked up off the ground, while others are still on the tree to be picked or shaken down. Bring a bucket, basket or bag to collect them in. The walk to the orchard is 100 to 250 metres over grass with a hill section, difficult for wheelchairs or standard strollers. A portaloo is on site, and Muffin Better and Canopy Ice Cream sell coffee, hot chocolate, walnut macarons and walnut ice cream on the day. Dogs are not permitted except assistance dogs. Booking a timeslot via the farm's ticketing page is required.
About Coaldale Walnuts
Coaldale Walnuts is a walnut orchard at 321 Prossers Road, Richmond, in the Coal Valley. Unlike most listings in this directory it does not run a regular pick your own season: instead the farm opens to the public for a single three day annual open farm weekend each year, typically the first weekend of May, when visitors can come and pick their own walnuts.
On the day, walnuts cost $8 per kilogram, with pickled walnuts available at a special event price of $14. Many nuts are collected straight off the ground, while others are still on the tree to pick or shake down, so visitors should bring a bucket, basket or bag. The event runs 10am to 4pm across the three days, rain, hail or shine, and requires a booked timeslot. The walk to the orchard is 100 to 250 metres over grass with a hill, which can be difficult for wheelchairs or standard strollers. A portaloo is on site, and local vendors sell coffee, hot chocolate and walnut flavoured treats on the day. Dogs are not permitted, other than assistance dogs. Outside this one May weekend the orchard is not open to the public.
