Pick your own in the Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges

Melbourne is unusually well served. The Dandenong Ranges and the Yarra Valley sit within about an hour of the city in slightly different directions, and between them they hold the largest concentration of self-pick berry farms in the country.

Berries are the reason

Both districts are cool and elevated enough for cane fruit, which most of Australia is not. Blueberries and raspberries are the mainstay, with blackberries and strawberries alongside, running through December to February and often into March in the hills.

The Dandenongs run slightly cooler and later than the valley floor, so when the valley is finishing, the ranges can still be picking. If you are chasing the end of a berry season, go up.

The valley also has orchards and flowers

The Yarra Valley carries stone fruit and apples as well as berries, which stretches its season into autumn, and both districts have flower and sunflower fields that open from spring. That makes the area worth a visit outside the berry months, which is not true of most self-pick districts.

Choosing between them on the day

The Dandenongs are closer for most of eastern Melbourne, cooler, and the farms tend to be smaller. Roads are narrow and winding, parking is often limited, and a wet morning makes the rows muddy.

The Yarra Valley is more open, the farms are generally larger with better parking, and it combines more easily with everything else the valley does. It is also hotter in midsummer, so go early.

Practical notes

Weekends fill early in January. Both districts are inside an easy day trip from a city of five million. Opening time on a weekday is a different experience from midday on a Saturday.

Take a layer. The ranges can be ten degrees cooler than the city, and a fine day in Melbourne is not a guarantee anywhere east of it.
