Pick your own around Brisbane and south-east Queensland

South-east Queensland runs on a different calendar from the rest of the country, and that is the single most useful thing to know about it. When Victoria and Tasmania are bare, Queensland is picking.

Strawberries are a winter crop here

This surprises visitors from the south. In south-east Queensland the strawberry season runs through the cooler months, and a farm can be picking from about June through to spring. The plants are set out in autumn and cropped through a mild winter, which is exactly the opposite of the southern pattern.

It makes the district the answer to “where can I pick strawberries in July”, which nowhere south of the border can offer.

Sunflowers and flowers

The region holds one of the largest sets of sunflower fields on this site. These are warm-season plantings, and farms often stagger them so that a field opens every few weeks through the warmer half of the year. They are short windows: a sunflower block is at its best for a week or two, and the farms announce openings at short notice.

Blueberries early

Blueberries here also come in ahead of the southern states, from late winter, for the same climatic reason.

Practical notes

Heat and humidity, not cold, are the constraint. Even in the winter strawberry season the middle of the day is warm. Early morning is better for both you and the fruit.

Storms. A summer storm can close a flower field for the rest of its short season. This is the district where checking the farm’s social media the morning you go matters most.

Get the fruit cold quickly. Strawberries picked warm and left in a car will not last the day. Take an esky.

Why this district matters to the rest of the site

If you are travelling, or if you simply want to pick something out of season, Queensland is where the calendar inverts. A trip north in winter is a self-pick option that does not exist anywhere else in Australia.
